Literature on Technology and Human ValuesProf. Haines, Spring 2008TR 11:30 - 12:45, Ball 214 This discussion-based course will be an introduction to narratives that have been created in conversation with their contemporary technology. We will read novels, short stories, plays and articles, and consider filmic texts, with a focus on how these works represent and evaluate various technologies and scientific thinking through their themes and literary techniques. We will discuss the historical and scientific contexts of the literary works, make connections between these narratives, and analyze the cultural observations and sentiments embodied in the texts. Our special focus will be on tracing the ethical impact of technologies on social views of humanity, as expressed by the texts.
